“Recipes From Around the World: Cooking as a Form of Identity and Cultural Dialogue” was the title of a workshop that took place this March as part of the SOULFood project at Community Cooking. The workshop was also part of the piloting of Module 3 for Caritas Vienna: Recipes From Around The World: Cooking As A Form Of Identity And Dialogue.

Several participants were invited to bring recipes from their countries of origin, cook together, and write down their stories. Recipes from Egypt, Nigeria, Romania, Turkey, and Tunisia were collected on papers, forming a beautiful expression of diversity and the culinary traces of different cultures.

Everyone writes their own story in their own way. In the SOULFood project, stories are told through recipes, shared cooking, and memories from our countries of origin. By making sure the workshops are low barrier, and not too complicated we try to bring cultures together and share them between each other

Would you like to hear one of the stories that was shared around the table that evening?

Neziha Türkmen has been a dedicated volunteer at Community Cooking since 2018. With her inspiration and courage, she continually brings new recipes from her homeland, dishes that are not only delicious but also carry the scent of home and a piece of cultural identity. Neziha lives close to our community kitchen, and plants her own grape trees at her garden. This makes it easier for her to collect wine leaves and store them to create her signature dish, Sarma! At the workshop she not only shared her Recipe with us but also taught us how to cook it.

Neziha wrote down her recipe and shared it with those present.
Here it is for you to enjoy and ‘’retell’’.
